Romano-British missionary bishop who Christianized Ireland in the 5th century, the most beloved national patron in Christian history.
Patrick was born to a Romano-British Christian family in the late 4th century (traditionally c.385). At sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders, transported to Ireland, and enslaved for six years as a shepherd in pagan Ulster. During this captivity, he wrote in his Confession that he experienced deep conversion: praying constantly through cold nights on the hillsides, learning the Irish language and culture. After six years he escaped — guided, he said, by a divine voice — and walked 200 miles to a port where a ship took him to Britain.
